Used to be that Asian cinema meant cheap kung fu films and artsy Japanese flicks. These days Hollywood has been remaking everything from Japanese horror (The Ring) to Corean romantic comedies (My Sassy Girl) to suspense thrillers (Infernal Affairs), in addition to releasing larger numbers of films by Asian directors like Zhang Yimou, Stephen Chow and Kim Ki-duk.
In fact, Hollywood seems to be following the trajectory of every industry from clothing to toys to cars. Is it just a matter of time before Asian cinema becomes Hollywood's main creative and production arm?
Um, I am a film major and Asian cinema is achieving parity with "European-American" cinema very fast and very permanently. Viz My Sassy Girl or My Yupki Girl. This is the kind of movie that is so good in its execution, as to be worthy of being shown for the final exam. Of course, I am talking about the original, and not the new version, directed by the same person who directed Bend It Like Beckham. I hope the new version is really good, but something as good as My Sassy Girl would be so difficult to surpass.
Jang Nara, especially in Oh Happy Day, is also very good.
And in closing, I think that one of the most important things that could be accomplished by the marketing arm of the film industry would be to somehow explain how words can be used as "templates" for the image on the screen; you know, how one could show a picture of the sun and the moon together on screen to mean "Ming Dynasty", or maybe a picture of lightning hitting a palm tree to mean "Ronald Reagan". This way of doing things is really nice, and "European-American" filmgoers deserve a chance to enjoy it!
And how come I haven't seen anything about J Church on this site?
